The use of lawnmowers and line trimmers around the base of trees can do a lot of damage to the bark and cambium layers down close to the ground or grass.  These injuries inturn can be the start of disease and insect infestation.  To help prevent this, remove the sod from around the base of the tree and replace it with mulch.  Then you won't have to mow the grass so close to the tree.
